last night as i lay in bed i began to think about the dark.
it has always scared me since i was a child and to be honest still kind of does.
although the dark might frighten me because of its unknown parts and hidden identities there is something calming, peaceful and beautiful about it.
it is summer and we don't have air conditioning. as i lay in bed under the fan i was so grateful for the dark because with it comes relief from the heat. it brings cool air, starry skies and the moon. it lays a blanket of still and quiet over the world, my town and my home. it is darkness that signals us to sleep, gives us rest from our busy bodies.
i continued to think of all these good things about darkness and wondered why it is so bad? yes in the daylight you can "see" and the sun is nice and it is normal to bustle about during the day. but there is something different and good about the darkness.
when i realized this i thought it kind of harsh for authors to play of off the dark and light symbolism in their novels through color and character sketches. why does light always win?
is it because with light signifies good and dark connotes bad?
bingo!
as i thought about this i began to think of Christ. could it be that in darkness there are qualities of God? in the light everything is out in the open, visible for all to see. in the dark there is an air of mystery and unknown. when trusting in God we don't always "see" everything and we walk "blindly" in faith as he directs us. with trusting God comes relief from ourselves, our selfish agendas and counter-productivity. this relief is like that of the cool breeze after a long hot day. it is in God we rest as we trust him, just as we rest (sleep) during the night...when the darkness comes.
these are things that i thought about last night as i lay in bed. it brought me great comfort and peace to realize that my fear of darkness was no longer, because now when the night comes i am reminded of God and why i put my trust and faith in him. it might be scary, but it is through stepping out into the "darkness" that relief comes.
